This season I am showcasing “trash” from two different worlds. The collection: The Fairway consists primarily of plastic bags from NYC Fairway Supermarket and unused trash bags from the Sidobre region of Southern France.
I deconstruct the familiar and mundane iconography that litters our visual landscape with the ubiquitous signage on plastic bags, and create something that is unfamiliar and a fashionable delight. I cut the plastic into strips, reorganize the graphics, weave the strips into a fabric and then finally transform the fabric into a handbag. Depending on the color and/or graphics of each individual plastic bag, a distinctive design and novel texture is created when woven. The result is an abstract image that is reminiscent of ancient hieroglyphs/urban graffiti and “moderne” curves. The possibilities are endless and continue to be full of unforeseen surprises that I am excited to share with you in this season’s collection.
