I recently visited the newly reopened Islamic collection at the Metropolitan Museum in NYC. I was overwhelmed by all the finery particularly the amazing textiles. But one thing in particular that caught my eye was a helmet made of chain mail.

A red flag went up when I saw this item. From my recycling world, I immediately thought of the Escama Bags made out of aluminum soda can pull tabs and the resemblance was uncanny. When I got home I googled chain mail and read: “It was typically an extremely prized commodity as it was expensive and time consuming to produce and could mean the difference between life and death”…. I thought of the collection and processing and then of the women in Brazil who make these bags by hand. I thought how this statement still applies to their survival in today’s world giving recycling a new connotation.
